December Graduation Spotlight: Peyten Castillo

December 9, 2024

Peyten Castillo describes herself as “the girl who’s always trying to help someone else or teach them new ways to do something.”

Born and raised in Abilene, Texas, Peyten started her time at Hardin-Simmons University as a nursing student but soon felt called to education, believing God recognized the impact she could make in the classroom.

“I feel like deep down I always knew I wanted to become a teacher,” said Peyten. “There is just something about watching a child light up when they understand a new idea that makes all the hard work worth it. My mom is an elementary teacher, so I was able to see the ins and outs of what the education system really is.”

Peyten has been an active Interdisciplinary Generalist Education student and a dedicated member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Xi Sigma Chapter, where she was nominated to serve as both Secretary and Vice President. In addition to her involvement with Kappa Delta Pi, she recently completed clinical teaching at Ward Elementary School. There, she gained hands-on experience by observing, planning, and independently managing both Kindergarten and First Grade classes.

“It has been one of the best experiences and I wouldn’t trade the memories I’ve made with these students for the world,” said Peyten.

Peyten credits HSU for helping her feel confident in the classroom because they helped prepare her for every scenario.

“I know I can always count on my education professors to answer my questions and guide me down the right path,” said Peyten. “The classes I had to take were hands-on and fun, while also very helpful in real-life situations.”

Peyten says she’s most proud of receiving enough scholarships to pay for her last two years of schooling, allowing her to focus on her studies while proving hard work does pay off.

When asked who has made the biggest impact on her time here at HSU, Peyten spoke of Dr. Renee Collins, professor of educational studies and associate dean of the Irvin School of Education

“I truly believe God put her in my life to help me become the best teacher I can be. I know I can always come to her for advice or just someone to laugh with. She is our biggest fan and pushes us to not only strive for our own success but to strive for our student’s success in and out of the classroom. She brings a sense of peace to everyone she meets and goes above and beyond for anyone who walks through her doors. I am so blessed to have her as a professor, mentor, and friend,” said Peyten.

After graduation, Peyten plans to start her journey with the Abilene Independent School District by substitute teaching. She’s hoping this will give her a chance to explore different grade levels she’s certified for and figure out which one feels like the best fit while gaining valuable experience along the way before ultimately finding a full-time position within the district.

When reflecting on her time at HSU, Peyten encouraged future and current students to get involved, branch out, and find a major they love.

“This school brought me friends that I will have for a lifetime. HSU is a school filled with love, encouragement, and above all, faith,” said Peyten. “The Lord fills every building through the campus community which is such an amazing thing to be a part of.”

Congratulations, Peyten!
